About Norman Brown
Norman Brown was born in 1949. I am the ninth child from a family of ten children. I grew up in Pittsburgh’s Hill District on Whiteside Road in the 1950’s and ‘60’s. I am a self taught artist of African American descent. I began seriously painting in the fall of 1977. I attribute the inspiration and ideas for my work to my constant contact with children (I teach children with Multiple Disabilities), my background in modern dance (where I learned how to deal with a blank stage – canvas), nature, primitive works of art, designs and use of color, and some portion of other artists’ works that evoke in me a hint of an image. My works include, but are not limited to, fantasy landscapes and figures, still life paintings, collages, painted drywall relief carvings and dance phrase images. I am a part of many collections in the Pittsburgh area including the University of Pittsburgh. I am currently represented by the Michael Hertrich Art and Frame Gallery.
